Traditional Malay House
The Malays of this country is consisted of many different
tribes, because of that many traditional Malay houses has a very distinct
characteristic of their own. This is clear to be seen various structural
construction that is unique to every state.
Traditional Malay house is a valuable asset to be preserved
for future generation.In architecture as a traditional Malay house has many
features that are not necessarily found in today's modern home. Malay community
is known for its creative nature, has built the house by linking Malay
architectural design with environmental factors.
The home gardens is filled with plants such as palm trees ,
lemongrass, turmeric and some other crops that provide a source of food to the
residents give a panorama of traditional Malay houses.
The interior of the house are separated by several sections
according to it needs and functionality and also emphasizing the layout of the
room as a place to entertaining guests at the house’s main living room for men
and middle room for women guests.
The decorations on every traditional Malay houses symbolized
the identity of the house itself. The interesting artistically carvings that are
inspired by floral motifs reflected that traditional Malay house is inseparable
from nature.
In a lot of construction design of traditional houses in
Malaysia, most of it are built in the state it's designed in, but Rumah Bumbung Panjang can be seen in
several different states with various changes and variations.
In the north west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, namely in
Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak , Rumah
Bumbung Panjang is very well known . The roof is quite high and steep and
typically has three parts, namely the porch of the house, the main house and
kitchen.
Rumah Negeri Sembilan
also characterized by it long roof but it was the only house in Peninsular
Malaysia which has a roof buckling up like buffalo horns. As well as the Rumah Melaka , which also known to have
long roof construction but the only difference is the length of the stone steps
on the porch of the house.
Other than Rumah
Bumbung Panjang there is also Rumah
Bumbung Lima which are believed to have been influenced by British and
Dutch which are famous in Penang , Perak , Selangor and Johor as well as the Rumah Bumbung Perak , which is also
known as Bumbung Potongan Belanda.
