6.0 Location of Rumah Bumbung Panjang
In some villages in Selangor there still exist a few Malay
traditional houses that are over 60 years of age. This type of house has similarities
with traditional Malay houses in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan because of the
history connection. Selangor’s Malay traditional house has three components,
namely, the original main house, center of home and the kitchens.
The main house has a porch’s verandah, porch, and rooms. The
middle house consisted of a household, rooms and living room (path) that
connects between the main house and kitchen. The kitchen in the back is for
cooking. Houses of this type are also known as Rumah Bumbung Panjang because the roof has a long straight ridge on
the edge of the horizontal and vertical wall mounted flat curtain wall that is
two layered.
Selangor Malay traditional house has a main house comprising
of 12 main pillars, namely 6 pillars and 6 pillars which is as high as the
foyer. The wood used is Cengal, Giam, Damar Laut, Meranti, Kapur Kempas while
the roofing is made of Rumbia and Nipah .
There are two types of traditional house of Kelantan
community which is Rumah Bujang and Rumah Tiang 12 of which both types shared
very similar structural characteristics. Rumah
Bujang was the commonly built home of the people living outside Kota Bharu
especially in the area near Terengganu, meanwhile the Rumah Tiang 12 is only available in some villages and in town of
Kota Bharu alone. This traditional house is still there, but it is increasingly
difficult to find and most house is over 100 years old.
Rumah Tiang 12
gets it’s name based on 12 pillars on the main home room, 6 porch poles and 6 long
poles. Long roof with mounted curtain side corner of the screen and it’s end is
installed with pemeleh ibu or also
known as fascias and a pair of pemeleh
ibu and a pair pemeleh serambi.
The house consists of three modules , namely Rumah Ibu , Central home and kitchen. Rumah Ibu has a hall which is a wide
space for entertaining guests. Middle house also accommodates rooms and sectional,
as well as a kitchen.
Rumah Bumbung Panajng
was also there in the center of national treasures or traditional themed
holiday center in which the houses are preserved for purposes of exhibition or
house rental (chalet). For example, in the National Botanical Garden Shah Alam
opened by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Malaysia there
are several Rumah Bumbung Panjang
built and used as accommodation for tourists who come to visit.
